Who we are

Rukuru Mining Ltd. is a Malawian registered company operating Chombe Coal Mine in Rumphi, northern Malawi where we work within the Livingstonia Coal Field. The area is known for its quality coal - typically yielding the highest colorific values in the country.

Mining commenced in 2017 with an underground room and pillar operation. We have grown steadily since then and today we count ourselves among the main coal suppliers. Our output is scaled to market requirements at a given time.

Our strength lies in the combination of 30 years of business acumen applied to a young mining operation. This has allowed us to scale to about 20 percent of national production over a short time, since commencing exploration in 2014.

e are the preferred supplier to several customers, big and small. Be it a family-run farm or a corporate factory producing for multinationals, we are comfortable working with you and commit to being a dependable partner in satisfying your energy needs.

Our Location in Northern Malawi

Where you can find us

Our stockpiles are just off the M1 road, some 2 hours drive north of Mzuzu. The mine itself is at the base of the cliffs, 3km along our access road up towards Chombe Mountain.

How we deliver to you

Combining the various fleets of our motivated transport partners with our own, we are able to offer interesting delivered prices anywhere in Malawi. Our stockpiles ensure we can send a backup load should a delivery get delayed for any reason. If all else fails we will deliver a smaller load at no extra cost to make sure you can keep operations going.

What we stand for

We know how frustrating it can be when you are counting on a delivery that gets delayed again and again. For this reason we do not make promises we cannot keep and will do everything in our power to ensure that your coal arrives when you need it every time so that you can relax in the knowledge that your coal supply is in good hands.

Not only our corporate customers place great emphasis on supply chain transparency and we are able to ensure all our customers of an accountable mining operation.

We know what it feels like to struggle with unreliable suppliers. That’s why we fret over your success in any way we can. From formulating an offer that’s right for you, to ensuring coal of consistently high quality reaches your yard in good time.

Our attention to sorting at every stage of production from deciding which faces to mine to everything downstream ensures that our coal is the best it can possibly be.

A word to our investors – old and new

We value the trust placed in us by our investors over the years. With this support we have established ourselves as a dependable partner in Malawi’s energy sector.

There is further scope to ramp up production to meet the growing market demand, which presents some very interesting investment opportunities for a suitably experienced partner to join our team.

A strategic partner could be actively involved with us in materially shaping the future of the company moving forward. Contact us if you would like to get involved.

A Quick Overview of Processing Operations

Mineral Processing operations cater to a wide variety of specifications for use in chain-fed boilers, pulverised coal-fired boilers as well as manually stoked boilers.

Do get in touch with us to discuss your particular energy needs, product samples and current test results. Together we will formulate a workable solution for your specific situation. If you have a special requirement for your boiler, we will be happy to work with you to adapt our processing operation accordingly in conjunction with an appropriate off-take agreement.

Our Main Products

Our main products are Nuts, Peas and Grain/Duff mix. With a variety of sieves we are able to process for your particular specifications. Do get in touch with us if you would like product samples and current test results.

Nuts

Sized from 20-45mm, this size is ideal for manually fed boilers with a grate.

Peas

Sized from 6-25mm and predominantly used in chain-fed boilers for steam production powering industrial processes, this is our main product and we always have some loads on stock.

Grain/Duff Mix

Sized 0-6mm, grain/duff mix finds use in pulverized coal-fired boilers.

Agglomeration

Our Research and Development Section is working with various stakeholders to formulate cost-effective solutions in meeting both industrial and household energy needs. Increased pressure on national forests has highlighted the need for viable alternatives to black market charcoal in satisfying household energy demand. In the national interest, we are working on formulating solutions to this dilemma as a matter of urgency.

Consultancy

We offer consultancy services to customers looking to transition from dependence on dwindling fuel wood to coal - one of the most abundant energy sources in the world.

Social

Since Exploration Phase we have implemented a comprehensive CSR programme which is ongoing and supports development within the local community.

Most of our employees come from the area around the mine. We are an equal opportunity employer.

Environment

The company has an active tree planting- and environmental rehabilitation programme to revive the areas impacted by poor farming practices and the ongoing deforestation caused by some of the local communities in a continuous search for firewood as well as illegal charcoal production and logging.

Collaborations with smallholders are ongoing. This should reduce dependence on the national plantations. These smallholders work as out-growers – fast growing eucalyptus seedlings are distributed with a view to buy back grown trees in a few years, once mature.
